Is my own store worth it if I am a small seller? Print

  • 0

Often, not yet. If you make a few hundred dollars a month on TPT and sell little or nothing elsewhere, Exclusive will almost certainly pay you more next year than Basic plus a brand-new store.

We build stores for a living, so take that as an answer against our own interest.

A new store starts slowly because it does not come with TPT's search traffic. Nobody arrives unless you send them: by email, from Pinterest, from a blog post or from your social accounts. You also start without your TPT reviews and your TPT buyer list. Neither can be taken with you.

What to do in the meantime

TPT says Exclusive sellers may run their own website and give away free resources, as long as they do not charge on TPT for something that is free elsewhere. So you can spend the year building what a store needs:

  • Start an email list with one good free resource.
  • Write short blog posts and pin them.
  • Keep your product files and listing text backed up outside TPT.

When a store starts to make sense

  • You already sell elsewhere, and it brings in something like a third of what TPT does.
  • You have an audience: an email list, or a following that clicks when you post.
  • Your TPT sales are falling anyway.
  • You want to sell something TPT does not suit, such as a pass to your whole catalog.

The worked numbers are in I make a few hundred dollars a month on TPT. Is my own store worth it? Then run the calculator with your own figures.
