Will my site go down during the move? Print

  • 0

In most cases, no. Your site keeps running at your old host while we copy and test it here, and the domain is pointed across only after you have seen the new copy working.

For a while, the same site exists in two places. Visitors reach the old one until the domain change spreads, then the new one. Both work, so nobody lands on an error page.

To keep it that way:

  • Do not cancel your old hosting yet. Leave it running until the move is finished, and for two weeks after, in case anything turns out to be missing.
  • Tell us if the site takes orders or sign-ups. Anything that happens on the old site after the copy is taken is not in the new one, so the switch should be timed for a quiet moment.
  • Expect a short overlap. A domain change takes anywhere from a few minutes to 48 hours to reach everyone. See I changed my DNS. Why do I still see the old site?
  • Check email on both sides for a couple of days if your mailboxes moved too.

After the switch

Open the site, sign in and try the things that matter: a contact form, a test order, a password reset. If something is not right, open a ticket right away. The old copy is still there to compare against.
