I changed my DNS. Why do I still see the old site? Print

  • 0

DNS changes take time to spread across the internet. It can be a few minutes or as long as 48 hours, and during that time some people see the new site while others still see the old one.

This is normal and nothing is broken. Internet providers each keep their own copy of the address book and refresh it on their own schedule.

While you wait, you can try:

  • Opening the site in a private or incognito window.
  • Opening it on your phone with Wi-Fi turned off, so it uses a different network.
  • Closing and reopening your browser.

Two things to expect as it changes over. The padlock may be missing for a short while, because the SSL certificate is issued once the domain points here. And if you moved email too, messages sent during the change may arrive at either the old or the new mailbox, so check both for a couple of days.

Leave the old hosting running until the change has fully settled. Canceling it early can leave some visitors with no site at all.

If 48 hours have passed

Open a ticket and tell us the domain, what you changed, where you changed it and when. A screenshot of the DNS settings page at your registrar helps us spot the problem.
