How do I point my domain at my hosting account? Print

  • 0

You change a setting where your domain's DNS is managed, usually at your registrar, and we give you the exact values to enter. Open a ticket to get them.

DNS is the internet's address book. It tells browsers which server your site is on, and tells other mail systems where to deliver your email.

In general, a domain is pointed at a host in one of two ways:

  • Change the A record. This moves only the website. Email and everything else stay as they are. It is the safer choice when your email is handled somewhere else, such as Google Workspace or Microsoft 365.
  • Change the nameservers. This hands all of the domain's DNS to the host, website and email together.

Which one applies to you depends on where your email lives and how the domain is set up today, so we would rather send you the correct records than have you guess.

What to put in the ticket

  1. The domain name.
  2. The company it is registered with.
  3. Where email for that domain is handled today, if anywhere.
  4. Whether there is a site on the domain now.

We will reply with the exact settings to change.

If we are moving your site

Do not change anything yet. Pointing the domain is the last step of a move, after you have seen the site working here. See How does the free move to Up At Last work?
